About the Refinishing Process

What Is Bathtub & Tile Refinishing?

Bathtub and tile refinishing is a process by which the old worn surface is given a new luster through the application of re-enameling.

What Is The Procedure?

First we clean your bathtub or tile of any dirt, soap scum, body oils or anything other element that may be trapped within the crevices of the worn porcelain. After it is completely clean, we etch the surface with a hydrofloric acid solution, which etches the surface and further works to eliminate any residing bacteria.

A thin coat of primer is applied followed by three coats of Acrylic Polyurethane. This is applied in flash coats and is built from light, to medium, to heavy.

The Process

How Long Does The Process Take?

This is truly dependent on the condition of your tub or ceramic tile to determine methods and time for preparation. A general rule of thumb for most bathtub refinishing projects is between 3 to 5 hours.

Tile refinishing projects generally require a full day of work.

How Long Does The Surface Have To Sit Untouched?

After refinishing your bathtub or tile, the surface must be allowed to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before use. There will be subsequent curing during the next 30 days, however over 90% of the curing is complete within the first 24 hours and it is perfectly fine to use after this time.

How Long Will This Last?

A realistic expectation of any refinished bathtub or ceramic tile job is between 5 and 10 years. This is dependent upon several factors, however.

1.

the condition of the bathtub or tile before refinishing;

2.

how often the refinished bathtub or tile will be used;

3.

the care that is taken of your newly refinished bathtub or ceramic tile.

For example, a bathtub that is badly worn will not have the lifespan of a bathtub that is moderately worn.

Tile is generally very durable and the only wear is typically in the shower area.

As for use, a newly refinished bathtub or tiled bathroom that serves as a guest bath will last longer than a refinished bathtub or tiled bathroom that has several uses per day.

Refinished tile that gets no use and isn't subject to bathing elements will typically have an indefinite lifespan.

As for care, the proper cleaners must be used and often enough so that your newly refinished bathtub or tile does not suffer from the natural damage that oils, dirt, and soap scum do.
